FAQs

What type of accounts does Surplus support?

Surplus supports the following account types:

  • Checking

  • Credit Card

What banks and financial institutions are compatible with Surplus?

The app supports transaction sync with over 10k institutions in US and CA. We hope to expand this feature to other countries in the near future.

How often does new transaction data become available?

Transaction data sync is not instant. Surplus checks for transaction updates multiple times throughout the day and automatically syncs them to your device(s) as they become available.

Please insure "Background App Refresh" is enabled on your device and for the Surplus app to insure the most optimal transaction sync experience.

How are transactions categorized?

By default, Surplus attempts to categorize transactions based on the three main bucket categories: "Needs", "Wants" and "Savings", selecting the default bucket for each category that is set under "Sync Settings"

As you adjust the categorizations of certain transactions, the app will remember those adjustments and automatically categorize them to the adjusted bucket the next time a similar transaction is synced. For more information about transaction categorization please refer to the Automation feature

Can I remove accounts?

You can remove linked accounts at anytime via the "Settings" tab and tapping on the "Accounts" option. The "Accounts" screen list all linked and manual accounts with the option to delete them. Please note that deleting an account will delete all transactions associated with that account.

How is my data synced and stored?

When you link an institution, Surplus securely stores a unique access key associated with the institution that it uses to sync data privately to your device using your iCloud account. By using iCloud, transactions synced on one of your devices are automatically and privately synced to any other supported devices that have the Surplus app installed.

Throughout this process, no personal or transaction data is stored on our servers. For more information about our data collection policies please refer to our Privacy Policy

How many accounts can I sync?

The app supports linking up to 5 financial institutions at a time. An institution refers to an entity that has one or more linkable accounts. For example, if you have a checking account and 2 credit cards under Example Bank. Connecting to those accounts will only count as 1 financial institution.

Do I need a Surplus Pro Subscription to use Transaction Sync?

Transaction sync is a "pro" feature and does require a valid Surplus Pro subscription. You can purchase Surplus Pro as either a one time payment or as a recurring subscription. Purchase offers and details are available in the app.
